For St. Patrick’s Day I went to Savannah. I wanted to see what all the hype was about and drink some green beers. So I traveled up from St. Simons the afternoon of St. Patrick’s Day and did exactly that. I had a wonderful time. And to recap my travel, I am going to tell you about the hotel I stayed at, my favorite beer spot, and a tip for those who haven’t been to Savannah to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day but plan on going in the future.
I stayed at the Hotel Indago in Savannah Historic District. The hotel was wonderful and conviently located in a popular section of downtown.
After I had checked in to my hotel, I went to Cafe at City Market for my first beer. I left and parused the city square, taking full advantage of Savannah’s Open Container laws.
As I was walking around, this guy, who introduced himself as Dallas, stopped me and asked me where I was going. I told him I was just walking around enjoying the city and that I had just got in from St. Simons. He realized I was alone and invited me to come with him to meet his friends at a bar around the corner.
We walked for about a mile until we got there. But when we did, I realized the walk was well worth it. McDonough’s was a clean, lively, and a wonderfuly cheap place. When we walked in we were greeted by a large group of Dallas’s friends. We grabbed some $2 beers and hit the dance floor. And that’s when I realized if I stayed in that bar for more than one drink, I would be getting myself into trouble. Dallas was a socialite and girls greeting him were curious to know who the stranger with him was. So I had my beer and left out of respect for my wonderful girlfriend.
Overall, I had a great time in Savannah. But one thing that I wish I would have had more guidance on before making my trip was the limitability of parking. When I got into town, I wasted so much time driving around looking for parking.
I ultimately ended up parking 0.8 miles away from my hotel. And if someone would have told me to plan on parking well away from the action, I would have done so in order to get right into the spirits of St. Patty’s day in Savannah.
